Meet ZahZee: Good For You. Good For the Planet

We asked Founder of ZahZee, Shannon Mostrom why she started an undergarment company with yours truly, HEMP.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and how you started your company?

ZahZee is on a mission to support the health of our bodies and the planet with organic hemp undergarments. No secret materials, pesticides, or harsh dyes. If it’s going on your body, you should know what’s in it.

I originally had the idea to start ZahZee because I struggled with recurrent UTIs, which led me on the path to rethinking underwear. I learned that most undergarments on the market are made from synthetic materials.

Even cotton, often considered to be the “gold standard,” isn’t always free from pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.

I wanted to find the most ideal fabric for women’s underwear, and that’s how I discovered hemp. It’s the star of our products because it’s antimicrobial, breathable, soft, and durable. It’s also biodegradable, organic, and requires 50% less water (and significantly less energy) to produce than standard cotton.

ZahZee is a unique name, who, what, why inspired you to name your company “ZahZee”? Is there a meaning behind the name?

ZahZee is a nickname my older brother gave me as a kid, and it’s still what my family calls me to this day.

What made you choose Hemp fabric and what benefit did you see using Hemp over another material?

Hemp is one of the most amazing fibers on the planet because of its health and environmental benefits. I originally chose hemp fabric because of its antimicrobial, breathable, moisture-wicking properties that make it perfect for healthy undies. As I continued to learn more about hemp, I discovered the environmental benefits of growing hemp and sourcing hemp as an alternative to standard cotton. Not only does hemp require significantly less water to grow, but it also reduces CO2 emissions, aids in soil regeneration, and is naturally organic reducing the need to use pesticides, herbicides, and harsh chemicals in the production process.

Why choose undergarments?

I chose to create undergarments to prioritize the health of our vulvas. I am passionate about creating intimates that actually support our bodies and focus on our health without trading off design and style. I also wanted to create a community that is open and eager to discuss women’s health issues without shame or embarrassment.

What is the most challenging thing you’ve learned in this business, what is the most rewarding?

One of the most challenging parts of creating ZahZee has been reframing hemp. Hemp isn’t an illegal drug – it’s a fiber that can help support your health and the health of the environment. Hemp is one of the most misunderstood and underutilized plants on the planet, and educating people on its benefits is incredibly important.

One of my experiences of creating ZahZee to date is collaborating and partnering with other women. I’m always so impressed and inspired when women form relationships to help each other succeed!

Can you tell us more about the IFund Women Campaign and why did you align yourself with this organization?

We just launched our IFW (IFundWomen) campaign to support the launch and growth of ZahZee. IFW is a funding marketplace that helps connect women-owned businesses with the people who want to support them. We’ve created awards that fund our mission and bring healthy hemp undergarments to more people.

By backing ZahZee, you're supporting the belief that healthy and eco-friendly undergarments should be accessible to everyone. Those who contribute, help us to achieve our goal of expanding our product line to be more inclusive of skin tone, body size, and gender and getting these hemp undies in front of more people!

What are some exciting updates or innovations happening with your company?

We recently launched a special collaborative collection with Casa Muza x Her Studio. This collection is a tribute to all self-identifying women and those who support them. The design represents strength and internal beauty. Plus, each piece of wearable hemp art celebrates love for our bodies and the planet. Consumers can go directly to your site but are there any plans to go to Retail?

Who is your ideal retail partner?

Right now, our ZahZee hemp intimates are available to purchase online and our collaborative collection is available to purchase in person at Casa Muza in Williamsburg, New York.

What does the Future of Hemp look like to you?

I’d love to see hemp cultivated more regularly in the US in the future. There is a lot of progress that needs to occur in order to produce and manufacture industrial hemp and the US is behind other countries because of regulation. Right now, the majority of the industrial hemp created in the world is sourced from China and India. More than 25,000 products can be made using hemp including clothing, health foods, biofuels, construction materials, and paper. This opportunity can significantly improve our impact on the environment and our health. I’m excited to see hemp cultivation become more accessible and the innovation that will come along with that in the future. There are so many many products that can be made using hemp.
